Do not buy this product for your children or grandchildren. Getting a Kindle Kids was a huge mistake. Plus, as a parent, I was excited to give him an electronic device that doesn’t have Minecraft, YouTube, and other time-wasting frivolities. Harris has recently started to enjoy reading, and I thought he’d appreciate a Kindle of his own rather than having to borrow his mother’s iPad. That’s why I thought a Kindle Kids ebook reader would make a great gift for my oldest son’s ninth birthday. In fact, it has gotten better with age: PDF support has improved greatly, there’s the great “page flip” feature (see “ Amazon Introduces Page Flip for Kindle,” 28 June 2016), and Amazon is even rolling out EPUB support. It’s longer-lived than many electronics (I’m still using one I bought when I started at TidBITS in 2013), the battery lasts forever, and I can sideload whatever ebooks I want over email or USB.

A tablet, or even a decent sized phone running the app version is the way to go for portable reading.

But others mileage may vary.īut you're definitely right about an e-ink reader, definite no no for something like this, the screen just isn't meant for the kind of responsiveness you'll want for a textbook. I actually found studying this way pretty convenient (mostly on my PC), since I could try implementing any new concept I learned in the book or a video in a moment's notice. You can also highlight and make bookmarks to significant portions of text if you want. I could just read and take notes, or put the book on half my monitor and use the other half to lab in packet tracer while referencing the book. I actually did most of my Lammle study with the Kindle version on my PC in dual column text mode. The formatting doesn't really cause issues with figures, and you can keep the text at a constant legible size. I'd say you can still use a kindle version or epub just fine.
